Glorifying the adversaries of the criminal

In his analysis of Walter Benjamin’s thoughts on the figure of the detective, Salzani writes: The detective novel is …, for Benjamin, part of the phantasmagoria of modern life.”  And, quoting Walter Benjamin, he adds:

“…the detective story… does not yet glorify the criminal, though it does glorify his adversaries and, above all, the hunting grounds where they pursue him”
