Conceptual metaphors are used to understand AND to reason

Standard

“Perhaps the most important thing to understand about conceptual metaphors is that they are used to reason with.  The Love Is a Journey mapping does not just permit the use of travel words to speak about love.  That mapping allows forms of reasoning about travel to be used in reasoning about love. It functions so as to map inferences about travel into infererences about love, enriching the concept of love and extending it to love-as-journey.”[1]  “Of course, love does not have to be conceptualized as a journey. Indeed, in many cultures, there is no such conceptualization of love.”[2]
